Many career-changers consider electrical work so they can set themselves up in business. Most newly qualified adult electrical workers choose to either work for themselves, or on a contract basis. It's very sensible when you look at how much work there is particularly in the domestic sector.
Some people train so they can do electrical work part-time to generate additional income. Then a smaller number enrol on courses to extend and legalise their DIY electrical skills. Happy clients will sing your praises to all and sundry when you've carried your work out well. So you'll be costing yourself money if you're not well mannered and considerate to everyone you deal with.
It's normal for employee electrical workers to put in around a 40 hr week - sometimes with extra overtime. They can expect an average income of twenty-six thousand pounds a year taking the UK as a whole. On the other hand, electricians who are self-employed can expect more erratic hours, but they can also command more money. They must think about their expenses though when quoting for jobs.
The two relevant trade certification boards in Great Britain are EAL and City & Guilds. National Vocational Qualifications can also be undertaken by proving commercial competency in industry. This typically will take three to four years. Re-trainers over the age of about 25 mostly study shorter courses part time, much of it at home. This type of coursework prepares students mostly for domestic jobs, so negates the need for the more extended NVQ's.
Career-changers want the best value for their money, and greater flexibility. Of course it means fewer certifications, but nevertheless students gain sufficient knowledge and skill (and the relevant certificates) for the field they'll be working in.
What's Involved In Such A Course?Domestic electrical installation training will generally lead to an EAL qualification. You'll learn how to install electrics, rewire houses and fit household electrical equipment. As everyone carrying out domestic electrical work now has to be Part P certified, your training will give you an understanding of what's needed.
The 17th edition IEE wiring regulations is another requirement for electrical workers. There are a number of other C&G certificates you might go for, to widen the range of work you can do. Domestic training such as that just described will probably take you several hundred hours, spread over whatever time period you choose.
